It is the streets, the terraces and the council rules. Here is what actually shapes a move around Balmain, Glebe, Leichhardt, Marrickville and Newtown. ### Parking is the real cost, not the kilometres Inner West Council takes about two weeks to process a truck parking permit, and it will not issue one for trucks over 3 tonne GVM. Most removal trucks are heavier than that. So on a lot of Inner West streets the truck parks further away and the crew carries your furniture the extra distance. That long carry runs about $1.50 a metre, so a 200 metre carry adds around $300 to a move. The fix is on us to plan. We check the street at quote time, sort the permit early where one helps, and bring enough crew that the carry does not blow out your hours. No lifts, steep internal stairs, and doorways on pre-1990 homes that are often just 76 cm wide. Fridges, washing machines and king beds do not always fit through on the first try. We measure the tight spots before we lift, so a wardrobe does not get halfway up the stairs and stop. ### The streets themselves Newtown, Enmore and parts of Marrickville have narrow one-way streets and permit parking that fills by 8am. Leichhardt and Lilyfield have steep driveways. None of it is a problem when the crew knows the area. It is a problem when two blokes turn up in a truck that cannot get near the door. ### Timing The M5 corridor into the Inner West clogs from 7 to 9am, so we schedule the truck arrival for after the peak on cross-city moves.
