Most local removalists charge $120–$180 per hour for two movers and a truck. Smaller two-person crews on a 4-tonne truck sit at the lower end ($120–$140). Larger 8 or 10-tonne trucks with three movers (typical for 3 or 4-bedroom homes) usually fall between $160 and $220 per hour. Travel time and call-out fees vary widely. Always ask if they're included in the hourly rate. ### How is moving cost calculated? Local moves are billed by the hour: crew size × hourly rate × time on the job, plus call-out and any add-ons. Interstate moves use a flat rate based on volume in cubic metres (m³) and distance between depots. Most reputable companies (TipTop included) use a calculator that asks for home size, add-ons and access conditions to produce an estimate within ±10% of the final price. ### What's the cheapest day to hire removalists? Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the middle of a month. Avoid end-of-month and the first or last weekend. These are peak lease turnover dates and most movers run a 15–25% premium. Booking mid-month, mid-week and outside school holidays can save you $200–$500 on a typical 3-bedroom move without sacrificing crew quality. ### What's the cheapest way to move interstate? Backloading. That means sharing truck space with another customer's move along the same route, often 30–50% below a dedicated truck. The trade-off is less flexible delivery windows (2–7 days). For tighter deadlines, a dedicated truck with a single drop-off costs more but gives you a guaranteed date. ### How long does a 3-bedroom move take? A typical 3-bedroom local move takes 4–6 hours with two movers and an 8-tonne truck. Add 1–2 hours for stairs, long carries or heavy-item handling. Interstate, the on-site loading takes the same time but delivery to the destination state runs 2–7 days depending on route and whether you book a dedicated or backload service. ### Do removalists charge for travel time? Most do. Typically 30–60 minutes added to your billable time, or a flat call-out fee of $80–$120. Always ask before booking. TipTop includes standard Sydney metro travel time in the hourly rate. Moves outside metro are quoted with travel time disclosed upfront. ### What's the most expensive month to move? December and January (summer peak), and the last weekend of any month (lease turnover). TipTop quotes a price range, not a fixed maximum, on hourly bookings. If the move runs over the estimate due to factors we couldn't see (traffic, building delays), you pay the actual hours used, billed in 15-minute increments after the first hour. We never round up. ### Do you require a deposit? A small holding deposit (10% of the estimate, capped at $200) secures your booked date. It is refundable up to 48 hours before the move. The balance is paid on completion by card or bank transfer. Never cash-only. ### What insurance is included? Standard Public Liability ($20m) and Goods in Transit cover ($50,000 per move) are included on every TipTop job at no extra cost.
