Where to Get Moving Boxes in Sydney: Free, Cheap and How Many You Need
========================================================================

TipTop Moving

  Published on 10/07/2026

You can get moving boxes in Sydney for free from Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree and your local bottle shop, or buy them from Bunnings, Officeworks and Kennards for $2 to $10 each. A three-bedroom home needs roughly 40 to 70 boxes. This guide covers where to look, what each box size is actually for, and how many you'll need, based on what we see on real Sydney moves.

Getting boxes wrong costs you twice. Too few and you're doing a second supermarket run the night before the truck arrives. The wrong type and your books split the bottom out of a free banana box on the stairs. Here's how to sort it once.

Free moving boxes in Sydney
---------------------------

Free boxes exist all over Sydney. The trick is knowing that the good listings get claimed within hours, so you check daily in the two weeks before your move, not the day before.

### Online: Marketplace, Gumtree and community groups

**Facebook Marketplace** is the fastest source. Someone finishes unpacking every day and wants their spare boxes gone. Search "moving boxes" and sort by distance. You'll often find a full set from one household, already flattened, free for pickup.

**Gumtree** has a dedicated Removals & Storage category for [free moving boxes in Sydney](https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-removals-storage/sydney/free+moving+boxes/k0c18643l3003435). Listings cluster around high-turnover suburbs like Camperdown, Lidcombe and Willoughby, where people move often. Many bundles come with bubble wrap and tape thrown in.

**Trash Nothing** and local "Buy Nothing" Facebook groups are worth a look too. Listings are smaller but the boxes are free and local.

One habit that works: message three listings at once. Half won't reply, so line up backups rather than waiting on a single pickup.

### Local businesses: bottle shops and supermarkets

Any business that gets regular stock deliveries has boxes to spare. Ask at the counter, be polite, and offer to collect at a set time. Two sources beat the rest.

**Bottle shops are the hidden win.** Dan Murphy's and BWS go through thousands of wine and spirit cartons, and those cartons come with cardboard dividers. Those dividers turn a free box into a purpose-built container for glasses, stemware and bottles. Ask on a delivery day, usually early in the week.

**Supermarkets** work for light items. Woolworths, Coles and Aldi produce cartons are clean and easy to grab. One honest warning: these boxes are built to sit on a shelf, not to be carried down a flight of stairs full of books. Free supermarket boxes collapse under weight. Use them for linen, pillows and pantry items, and keep the heavy stuff in proper boxes.

Bunnings, Officeworks and Big W also break down large stock cartons through the day. Ask what's heading to the recycling bay.

Where to buy moving boxes in Sydney and what they cost
------------------------------------------------------

Free boxes are a mix of shapes and strengths. If you want boxes that stack cleanly and survive the move, buying a set is worth it. Here are the real prices around Sydney in 2026.

- **Bunnings:** single boxes from $2 to $5, plus moving kits that bundle boxes, tape and butcher's paper. Bulk buys drop the per-box price.
- **Officeworks:** a full range of [moving boxes and cartons](https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/c/workplace-supplies/mail-packaging-supplies/boxes/moving-boxes), with next-day delivery on online orders if you're short on time.
- **Kennards Self Storage and Storage King:** sturdier double-wall boxes from around $5 to $10 for the larger sizes. Kennards runs box shops across Sydney, so there's usually one near you.
- **The Moving Box Company** and similar Sydney suppliers deliver full house kits to your door, which saves the pickup runs if your week is already full.

A practical middle path: gather free boxes for light, bulky items and buy a dozen strong book cartons for the heavy things. You get the cost saving without the collapsed-box drama.

Box types explained: what goes in each
--------------------------------------

Australian removalists use a standard set of box sizes. Matching the item to the box is what stops breakages and back strain.

- **Book carton (small):** around 40 by 30 by 43 cm, double-wall. Built for heavy, dense items. Books, tools, tinned food, crockery, records.
- **Standard carton (medium):** the everyday box. Kitchen items, small appliances, clothing, linen, toys.
- **Tea chest (large):** around 61 by 51 by 41 cm. Bulky but light. Bedding, doonas, pillows, lampshades, soft toys. Never fill a tea chest with books, because you won't be able to lift it.
- **Port-a-robe:** a tall box with a hanging rail. Clothes go straight from the wardrobe onto the rail and stay on their hangers.
- **Picture and mirror boxes:** flat, adjustable boxes for framed art, mirrors and TVs.

The rule that keeps your back safe: heavy items in small boxes, light items in big boxes. It feels backwards, but a small box of books is liftable and a large box of books is not.

How many moving boxes do I need?
--------------------------------

The honest answer is that it depends on how long you've lived there and how much you own. These ranges match what we load on real Sydney jobs.

Home sizeBoxes (approx.)Mix that worksStudio / 1 bedroom15 to 25Mostly small and medium2 bedrooms25 to 40Add a few tea chests and a port-a-robe3 bedrooms40 to 7016 small, 34 medium, 7 large, plus wardrobe boxes4+ bedrooms70 to 100+Garages and sheds add 20 to 30 on their ownBuy or gather 10 to 15 per cent more than you think you need. The garage, the linen cupboard and the "miscellaneous" drawer are always underestimated.

If you'd rather not guess, our [moving cost calculator](/calculator) sizes your move by home type and shows the truck you'll need, which tells you roughly how many boxes go with it. No sign-up, no phone call.

What to do with boxes after your move
-------------------------------------

Good boxes are worth passing on, and Sydney makes that easy.

**Return them.** Some removalist box-hire schemes let you use boxes for a week before the move and return them weeks after, so nothing ends up in landfill. Plastic crate hire works the same way.

**Sell or give them away.** Repost the set on Marketplace or Gumtree the day you finish unpacking. They'll be gone by the weekend, and you've closed the loop for the next person.

**Recycle the rest.** Flatten cardboard and put it in your kerbside recycling, or find a nearby cardboard drop-off through [Recycling Near You](https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/), run by Planet Ark. Break boxes down flat so they actually fit the bin.

Frequently asked questions
--------------------------

### Where can I get free moving boxes in Sydney fast?

Facebook Marketplace is the quickest. Search "moving boxes", sort by distance, and message a few listings at once because the good ones go within hours. Bottle shops and supermarkets are the best backup if you need boxes the same day.

### Are supermarket boxes strong enough for moving?

For light items, yes. For books, crockery or anything heavy, no. Supermarket and produce boxes are made to sit on a shelf, not to be carried full down stairs. Keep the heavy items in proper double-wall book cartons.

### What size boxes should I get?

Most of your packing goes into small book cartons and medium standard cartons. Add a couple of tea chests for bedding and pillows, and a port-a-robe for hanging clothes. Heavy in small, light in large.

### Is it cheaper to buy or find free moving boxes?

Free saves the most money if you have two weeks to collect and don't mind mismatched sizes. Buying a set costs $2 to $10 a box but gives you boxes that stack and survive the move. Most people do both.

### Do removalists supply boxes?

Some do, and TipTop is one of them. We supply moving boxes for our customers, so if we're handling your [local move in Sydney](/local-moves) you don't have to chase boxes across the city the week before. Ask about boxes when you get your quote and we'll sort out what you need.

Once you've got your boxes sorted, the next job is packing them so nothing shifts. Our [room-by-room packing guide](/blog/packing-tips-for-moving-house) covers the order to pack in and how to wrap the fragile things. And when you're ready for a fixed price on the move itself, the [calculator](/calculator) gives you a range in about a minute.
