Call first, book a week or two ahead, and be honest about the state of the item. If it's stained, broken or a mattress past its best, most charities will say no, and your council's free hard rubbish pickup is the backup. Moving is the best time to sort this out. Every piece you pass on is one less thing to wrap, carry and pay to move. Here's who takes what in Sydney, and what to do with the things nobody wants. Sydney charities that pick up furniture --------------------------------------- Four options cover most of Sydney. Call ahead with every one, because pickup depends on the item, your suburb and how busy they are that week. The good charities fill their pickup runs a week or two out, and a booking that lands after moving day helps nobody. What charities will and won't accept ------------------------------------ The rule across every charity is simple: would someone buy it in the shop tomorrow? If yes, they want it. If it's broken, unsafe or stained, they can't sell it and won't take it. **Furniture in good condition** is welcome. Dining tables, sofas, wardrobes, drawers, bookshelves and solid timber pieces all move quickly through op shops. Give each piece a wipe down first. Clean wood, metal and glass with the right cleaner, and vacuum anything with fabric to clear dust and pet hair. A clean item is far more likely to be accepted on the spot. **Mattresses are the strict one.** This is where most donations get knocked back. A mattress has to be clean, with no stains, tears, odours or sagging. Salvos generally want them near new. The Bower takes recent models. If yours has seen a decade of use, assume the answer is no and plan for the council or a mattress recycler instead. **What they won't take:** anything with visible stains, water damage, rips or a soiled surface, plus items that are structurally unsafe. Pyrmont Cares also draws the line at mattresses, beds, wardrobes and long sofas, so check their list before you book. When in doubt, send a photo. A quick message saves the charity a wasted trip and saves you the disappointment of watching the truck leave your lounge on the nature strip. What to do if no one will take it --------------------------------- Plenty of furniture is too worn to donate but too big for the kerbside bin. Sydney gives you two clear paths. **Book a council hard rubbish pickup.** Every Sydney council runs one, and it's free. - **City of Sydney** residents can [book a bulky item pickup](https://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/waste-recycling-services/book-pick-up-for-bulky-items) online, available most weeks. - **North Sydney** collects household items every second Monday, up to 2 cubic metres per home. Book by 4pm the Sunday before on 1300 799 019. - **Inner West** and most other councils have their own clean-up booking, usually online in a couple of minutes. Councils take furniture, mattresses, white goods and e-waste. Write your booking number on the items so neighbours know they're going, not up for grabs. **Sell it or give it away.** If it's still usable, list it on Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or a local Buy Nothing group the moment you decide it's not coming with you. The Bower will also collect items for repair that a charity shop might reject. Donating before a move: less to move, smaller truck --------------------------------------------------- Here's the part that saves you money, not just space. Removalists price by volume, so every item you donate before moving day is volume you don't pay to shift. The maths adds up fast. A three-seater lounge is around 1.7 cubic metres. A double wardrobe is another 1.2. So before you book anything, walk each room once and be honest. The spare mattress in the garage, the desk nobody uses, the second couch waiting for a house that never got bought. Donate what's good, recycle what's not, and quote the move on what's actually left. Around one to two weeks, and up to a month during busy moving periods like the end of the month.
