The Real Cost of Interstate Moving in Australia 2026
======================================================

 TipTop Moving

  Published on 11/04/2026

A removalist quotes you $2,800 to ship a 3-bedroom home from Sydney to Brisbane. Three weeks later you pay $3,600. Where did the extra $800 come from?

Probably from five places, none of which were lies. The quote was just a starting point. This guide is what we wish every customer knew before they signed anything.

What a Real 2026 Interstate Move Actually Costs
-----------------------------------------------

Here's the honest range for an interstate move from Sydney in 2026, based on what we see across our own jobs and what the rest of the industry is charging:

- **Sydney to Canberra (~300 km):** $1,200 to $3,500 depending on home size
- **Sydney to Gold Coast (~800 km):** $1,600 to $4,500+
- **Sydney to Melbourne or Brisbane (~900 km):** $1,800 to $5,000+
- **Sydney to Adelaide (~1,400 km):** $2,200 to $6,000+
- **Sydney to Perth (~3,900 km):** $3,500 to $8,500+

These are not "from $X" headline figures. They cover a one-bedroom unit at the bottom and a four-bedroom house at the top. Your number depends on your volume, your access at both ends, and the choices you make along the way.

For the route-by-route breakdown with every home size, see our [interstate moving costs guide](/interstate-moving-costs).

We've worked through 1,000+ interstate moves at TipTop. The pattern is consistent: people aren't surprised by the headline number. They're surprised by the gap between the headline and the final invoice.

The Gap Between Quote and Final Bill
------------------------------------

The gap is usually $300 to $1,200. It comes from a small handful of line items that most quotes don't price properly until moving day.

Here are the five we see most often, with realistic numbers:

**Long-carry fees ($80 to $200).** Your truck can't park within 20 metres of your front door. Maybe it's a strata building with a tight loading bay. Maybe a council parking restriction. The crew has to walk every box and every chair across that distance, and the time gets billed.

**Stair fees ($50 to $100 per flight, both ends).** A two-flight walk-up at one end and a single flight at the other adds $150 to $300 to a move that didn't quote stairs. It is the most common surprise we see when we audit other quotes for customers.

**Last-minute packing ($300 to $600).** You thought you'd pack everything yourself. Then it's the night before, the kitchen is still open, and you call the crew to handle it. That gets billed at the going packing rate, not as a discount.

**Storage between dates ($50 to $150 per week).** Pickup is the 14th, your new lease starts the 21st. Someone has to hold your stuff for a week. That cost rarely sits in the original quote.

**Insurance you didn't ask about.** Basic transit cover is included almost everywhere. It pays out at a fixed dollar amount per kilo, which means your $4,000 mattress might be worth $80 in a claim. Full Replacement cover costs more upfront but protects what your stuff is actually worth.

None of those line items are scams. They are real costs. The problem is that they often turn up after you've signed.

A fixed quote handles this differently. The crew runs a proper inventory upfront (in person or by video), prices the entire job including access and packing, and the number you sign is the number you pay. No phone call from the truck on moving day.

![TipTop Moving truck parked at the loading depot ready for an interstate run](https://ttmoving.com.au/images/content/fleet/moving-truck-side-at-depot-landscape.webp)

Why Two People on the Same Route Pay Different Prices
-----------------------------------------------------

Distance and volume get all the attention. They're the easy story: more kilometres, more cubic metres, more dollars. But they only explain part of the variance.

The bigger gap comes from six choices the customer makes:

1. **Dedicated truck or backloading.** Dedicated means your stuff has the truck to itself, door to door. Backloading means it shares space with another job heading the same way. Backloading saves 20% to 35% in our experience. Not 50%, despite what some operators advertise. Your call.
2. **Peak season or off-peak.** December to February, end-of-month, and the week of public holidays push prices up 15% to 25%. Tuesday to Thursday, mid-month, May to October is the value window.
3. **Self-pack or full-pack.** Packing a 3-bedroom home yourself saves $400 to $800. Packing it yourself badly costs more in damaged items than you saved.
4. **Access at both ends.** Driveway, ground floor, easy parking is the cheap baseline. Anything else adds time, and time is the entire cost structure.
5. **Insurance tier.** Basic vs Full Replacement is a several-hundred-dollar decision. The right answer depends on what you own.
6. **Lead time.** Booking three weeks out gets you choice of crew and date. Booking three days out gets you whatever's left, often at a premium.

Do these stack? Yes. A 3-bed Sydney to Brisbane move done dedicated, peak-season, last-minute, with stairs both ends and full packing will land 60% to 80% above the same move done off-peak with backloading and good access. Same route, same volume, very different bill.

Fixed Quote vs Estimate vs Per-Cubic-Metre
------------------------------------------

The word "quote" gets used for three different things in this industry. They are not the same and they do not protect you the same way.

**Estimate.** A ballpark, often given over the phone or from a contact form. It's based on what you described, not what's actually in your house. If your description was off, the price changes. Estimates are useful for shopping around. They are not what you should be paying from on moving day.

**Per-cubic-metre rate.** A dollar figure per m³, multiplied by your volume. The catch: nobody knows your real volume until the truck is loaded. The number you saw at the start was a guess. The number you pay is whatever the dispatch team measures on the day.

**Fixed quote.** A flat dollar figure based on a proper inventory, including access details, packing, insurance tier, and timing. Once it's signed, it doesn't move. This is what you want.

When you ring around for prices, ask one question: "Is this a fixed quote, or will the price change based on what you find on moving day?" The honest answer tells you everything about what kind of company you're dealing with. [AFRA-accredited](https://afra.com.au/) members are required to provide written quotes with clear inclusions, which is one good filter when you're shortlisting.

If something feels off about a quote you've received, the [ACCC's guide on unfair contract terms](https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/contracts-agreements/unfair-contract-terms) is worth reading before you sign.

How to Close the Gap (Without Getting a Worse Move)
---------------------------------------------------

You can't make an interstate move free. You can stop paying for surprises. Five concrete moves:

**1. Ask for a video walkthrough quote.** Twenty minutes on a video call where the estimator sees every room, every wardrobe, every garage corner. The fixed quote that comes out the other end will not change on moving day. This is the single biggest gap-closer.

**2. Be honest about access.** Stairs, narrow halls, a long carry from the truck, a difficult lift slot at the new place. If the quote knows about it upfront, it's priced in. If the quote doesn't know, it gets added later.

**3. Decide packing now, not the night before.** If you want the crew to pack, book it with the move. Last-minute packing is the most expensive packing.

**4. Move mid-week, mid-month, off-peak.** Same crew, same truck, same care. Different price. May to October, Tuesday to Thursday, is the cheapest window of the year.

**5. Match the insurance to what you own.** Basic transit cover is fine for a one-bedroom of flatpack furniture. A house with art, instruments, antiques, or designer pieces needs full replacement. Don't downgrade to save $100 on a $50,000 shipment.

For a quick estimate based on your specific home and route, our [interstate moving cost calculator](/calculator) takes about a minute and uses real pricing.

    Common Questions
----------------

**Are interstate removalist quotes legally binding in Australia?**

Only fixed quotes are. Estimates and per-cubic-metre rates are starting points that can move. If you want price certainty, ask for the word "fixed" in writing and confirm what's included. A fixed quote signed by both parties is enforceable.

**What's the cheapest way to move interstate from Sydney?**

Backloading during off-peak season, with self-packing and good access at both ends. Realistic saving versus a peak dedicated move with full packing: 30% to 45%. Not the 50% some operators advertise.

**When is the cheapest time of year to move interstate in Australia?**

May through October, mid-week, mid-month. Avoid the Christmas window (mid-December to mid-January), end-of-month dates, and the week of any public holiday. Demand is lower in winter and prices reflect it.

**What's actually included in a "from $1,800" quote?**

It depends on the company. At a minimum it should cover door-to-door transport, professional wrapping of your furniture, transit insurance at the basic tier, and GPS tracking. It often does not include packing materials, custom crating, storage, stair fees, or long-carry fees. Always ask before you book.

**Do I need to tip interstate removalists in Australia?**

No. Tipping is not part of the culture here the way it is in the US. Cold drinks on a hot day are appreciated. A small tip is welcome but never expected.

**How much does insurance actually add to the price?**

Basic transit cover is included almost everywhere at no extra cost, but the payout is limited. Full Replacement cover typically adds 1% to 3% of the declared value of your goods. On a $40,000 household, that's $400 to $1,200. For most people moving interstate it's worth it.

**Why do removalists charge per cubic metre instead of per kilo?**

Trucks fill up by space before they fill up by weight. A truck loaded with feather pillows weighs nothing but takes the same room as a truck loaded with bricks. Volume is the honest measure of how much space your stuff is taking.
