"Declutter early." "Label your boxes." "Pack a first-night box." We've run more than 1,000 moves across Sydney and interstate, and the tips that actually change your bill or your moving day are nothing like that. They're the ones nobody bothers writing down because they're too specific to the place, the council, the season. Below are 25 of them, focused on Australia, weighted toward Sydney where most of our crews work. Where a tip applies nationally, we say so. Where it's Sydney-only, we say that too. Plan and Save Money (Tips 1-6) ------------------------------ What you do in the first two weeks of planning costs you nothing and shapes your final bill more than anything else. ### 1. Book exactly 4 weeks out, not 6 Conventional advice says "book 6 weeks ahead." The reality across our Sydney calendar is that **4 weeks is the sweet spot**. Earlier than that and you're locking in dates before you know what's actually moving, which causes change fees. Later than that and the cheap mid-week slots are taken. Booked 4 weeks out, you have time to declutter accurately AND still have full slot choice. ### 2. Run the numbers before you call anyone Use our [moving cost calculator](/calculator) for a 60-second range based on your home size. Two reasons: it puts you in the conversation already knowing the median (so wildly low quotes look suspicious instead of attractive), and it surfaces what you forgot to mention (stairs, packing, heavy items). Customers who calculator-first underestimate their move by 5 m³ on average. Knowing that upfront saves an awkward "actually it's bigger" call later. ### 3. Verify three things before you commit, in this order Insurance certificate, ABN on the quote, written cancellation policy. In that order. A removalist that hesitates on any of those three is one to walk away from. Insurance proof should be a current certificate of currency, not a marketing claim. The ABN should appear on the quote document itself, not just the website footer. The cancellation policy should be in writing with specific timelines and dollar amounts. Companies happy to provide all three quickly are companies that have nothing to hide. ### 4. Mid-month Tuesday saves more than mid-week alone Everyone knows mid-week is cheaper. Fewer people know that the **6th to the 24th of the month** is the cheapest 18-day window in any given month. End of month is lease turnover (busiest). First weekend is settlement day for a lot of property purchases. Bridge those two and Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday in the middle of a month is where the deepest discounts and best crews land. ### 5. Quote first, declutter second, re-quote third Most people declutter, then quote. We see customers throw out 30% of their furniture, then still get charged for the original volume because the quote was locked in. Better order: get a rough quote on your full inventory, declutter aggressively over 2 weeks, then ask for a re-quote 2 weeks before the move. Rates often drop $300-$800 for a 3-bedroom move based on the lower volume. ### 6. The "from $X" trap in quotes Every removalist quote you see online starts with "from $X." That number assumes a 1-bedroom move on a Tuesday in May with no stairs, no packing, no heavy items. Real quotes for 3-bedroom homes typically run 3-4x the headline. Get a written quote on YOUR actual scope before you compare anything. Plastic tubs win in Sydney summer humidity Cardboard absorbs moisture and collapses in humidity above 70%. Sydney from December through February sits there often. For the kitchen, bathroom and any electronics, **plastic tubs from Bunnings or Kmart** ($8-$15) outperform cardboard for a January move and you can reuse them. For a 3-bedroom summer move, a $200 investment in tubs saves at least one collapsed-box incident. ### 8. Measure your doorways before you book Most pre-1990 Sydney apartments have a maximum interior doorway width of 76cm. Modern fridges and king-size bed frames often exceed that. **Measure the narrowest doorway and stairwell on each end before you book**. Our team carries straps and dollies for tight squeezes, but knowing in advance changes whether we send a 3-person crew (for hoisting over balconies) or a standard 2-person crew. Tell us upfront, save 90 minutes on the day. ### 9. Books in wine boxes, not "small boxes" Generic moving boxes max out at 5kg of books before the bottom gives. **Empty wine boxes from Dan Murphy's or Bottle Mart** are designed for ~12kg and are free. Walk into any bottle shop on a Monday or Tuesday and they'll happily give you 20-30 boxes. Saves you $80 in box purchases on a 3-bedroom move and the cardboard is significantly stronger. ### 10. Photo every cable before you unplug Take a photo of the back of your TV, your modem-router setup, your computer cables, and your kitchen appliance plugs. We've watched grown adults stare at a tangle of HDMI cables for an hour at the new place trying to remember which port the soundbar goes into. 30 seconds of photos saves 30 minutes per device. ### 11. Pack the kitchen LAST, not first Standard advice says start with the kitchen because it's the hardest. We disagree. **Pack the kitchen 48 hours before move-out** with a "use-it-up" mindset, eat what's in the fridge, donate the unopened pantry items 3 days before. Packing the kitchen 2 weeks early means you live out of takeaway containers for 14 days and waste 30% of your perishables. ### 12. Wardrobe boxes are overrated, garbage bags are not Removalists love selling wardrobe boxes ($40-$80 each). For most clothes, you don't need them. **Bunch 8-10 hangers, slip a tall garbage bag over them upside-down with a hole cut for the hooks, tie at the bottom**. Free, faster than transferring to a wardrobe box, and clothes hang straight up at the new place. The exception: long evening dresses and coats that drag on the ground in a bag, those need an actual wardrobe box. ![Moving boxes packed with care and ready for transport](https://ttmoving.com.au/images/content/graphics/moving-boxes-with-lamp-plant-landscape.webp) Sydney-Specific Logistics (Tips 13-18) -------------------------------------- These are the tips that actually save Sydney movers money. They're useless if you're moving in Bendigo. They matter if you're moving in Newtown. ### 13. Inner West and City permits take 2 weeks If you're moving in Balmain, Glebe, Leichhardt, Marrickville, Newtown, Annandale or anywhere within 4km of Sydney CBD, you likely need a council parking permit for the truck. [Inner West Council](https://www.innerwest.nsw.gov.au/parking-and-rangers/parking-permit) takes around **two weeks** to process applications. **Apply the day you confirm your move date**, not the week before. Without a permit, your truck might park 200m away and you're paying for the long-carry fee ($1.50/m typically, so $300 added on a 200m carry). ### 14. The Eastern Suburbs 4.5-tonne rule Trucks longer than 7.5m or heavier than 4.5 tonnes can only park in built-up Eastern Suburbs areas (Bondi, Bronte, Coogee, Vaucluse, Double Bay) for a maximum of one hour without specific permits. Our standard 8-tonne and 10-tonne trucks fall over this limit. **For Eastern Suburbs moves we typically send a 4.5-tonne truck or pre-arrange a council permit**. Tell your removalist your destination suburb at booking, not on the day. ### 15. The garage is a storage room, not a moving room Sydney garages are typically full of stuff people forgot they own. **Audit your garage 4 weeks before the move**, not 4 days. Roughly 40% of what we find in Sydney garages on moving day was forgotten about (camping gear that hasn't moved in 5 years, boxes from the previous move, abandoned hobby equipment). Pre-sell or pre-donate it instead of paying us to move it 30km, and you save $200-$400 on a typical move. ### 16. Tower lift bookings: book 5 days ahead If you're moving in or out of any Sydney apartment building over 5 storeys, you need to book the lift through building management or strata. Most buildings need **5 business days notice**. Some require a $200-$500 deposit refunded after the move if no lift damage. Without a booked lift slot, your crew shares a lift with residents and the move takes 30-60% longer, which means it costs 30-60% more. ### 17. Stay off the M5 between 7am and 9am If your route crosses the M5 corridor (anything from south Sydney to inner west during morning peak), you'll add 30-60 minutes to the run. Same applies to the Sydney Harbour Bridge between 7-9am and 4-6pm. **Schedule the truck arrival for 9:30am start or after 10am** for inner-city routes. The hourly rate doesn't pause for traffic. ### 18. Defrost AND drain the fridge 24 hours before Standard advice: defrost the fridge. Reality: most people defrost but don't drain. The water collects in the bottom tray and sloshes onto your other belongings during transit. **Defrost AND drain AND dry it out completely**. Tape the doors with masking tape (not duct tape, no residue). Get these sorted in the week BEFORE. ### 19. NBN: book 2-3 weeks ahead, plan for 1-3 days dark Most ISPs need a minimum of 2 business days notice for an internet move, but the [official nbn moving guide](https://www.nbnco.com.au/residential/moving-home) recommends notifying your provider 4 weeks ahead. Realistic timeline is **2-3 weeks** if you want it live the day you arrive. If your new address already has an active NBN connection, transfers take 1-3 business days. If it's a new connection, allow 2-4 weeks. Plan to be without home internet for at least one day, longer if your provider isn't Telstra or Optus. ### 20. Service NSW: change address in one transaction [Service NSW lets you change your address](https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/change-address-with-nsw-government) on driver licence, vehicle registration, voter roll and other NSW services in one MyServiceNSW account update. **Do it within 14 days of moving**, that's the legal requirement for licence and rego address. Costs nothing, takes 5 minutes online. ### 21. Moving INTO NSW from interstate: blue slip required Driving an interstate-registered car? You have **90 days to register it in NSW**. You'll need a [blue slip inspection report](https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/transfer-or-register-an-interstate-vehicle) from an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station, dated within the last 42 days. Plus CTP green slip insurance and proof of identity. The inspection is the bottleneck, book it the week you arrive, not the week before the deadline. ### 22. Mail redirection: 5 business days lead time [Australia Post mail redirection](https://auspost.com.au/receiving/manage-your-mail/redirect-hold-mail) costs $37 for 3 months and needs **5 business days to activate**. Set it up the week before you move, not the day you move. Without it, you'll be chasing tax notices, bank statements and registered mail to a stranger's letterbox. ### 23. Strata move-in fees vary wildly Some Sydney strata buildings charge a flat **$200-$500 move-in fee** to cover lift padding inspection and post-move cleanup. Some charge nothing. **Ask your strata manager BEFORE you book the move**, not the day before. Unpack the kitchen and one bedroom only on day 1 Trying to unpack everything in 48 hours is the path to burnout. Two rooms is realistic and enough. **Kitchen so you can eat, one bedroom so you can sleep**. Everything else can wait 7 days. People who attempt full unpack in a weekend statistically still have boxes in the spare room 4 months later. ### 25. Photograph damage BEFORE the crew leaves If anything arrived broken or damaged, photograph it immediately, before signing the inventory checkout. **Walk every room with the foreman** and note anything before the truck pulls away. With time-stamped photos and a noted inventory entry, transit insurance claims process within 1-2 weeks. Without them, claims drag on for 2-3 months and are easier to deny. Moving House FAQs ----------------- The questions we hear from customers in the week before moving day, with direct answers. ### What's the cheapest day to move house in Sydney? Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between the 6th and 24th of any month. Avoid end-of-month and the first/last weekend, those are peak lease turnover and rates run 15-25% higher. Saturdays are typically 15-20% more expensive than weekdays, Sundays often double. Booking 4 weeks ahead on a mid-week, mid-month date gets the best rate. ### How much does it cost to move house in Sydney? Local Sydney moves: studio $300-$600, 2-bed $500-$900, 3-bed $800-$1,400, 4-bed $1,200-$2,400. Interstate from Sydney: starts around $1,800 for a 1-bed, tops near $13,000 for a 4-bed Sydney to Perth. Packing a 3-bedroom takes 3-4 days self-pack in evenings and weekends, or 1 day with a professional crew. The actual move takes 4-6 hours with 2-3 movers locally. Interstate, the loading takes the same time but delivery to the destination state takes 2-7 days depending on route and dedicated vs. backloading. ### Do I need a council permit for the moving truck in Sydney? Yes, in most Inner West suburbs (Balmain, Glebe, Leichhardt, Marrickville, Newtown), in the City of Sydney CBD radius (4km), and parts of Eastern Suburbs. Apply 2 weeks ahead through your council. Inner West Council does not issue permits for trucks over 3 tonne GVM, so check truck size with your removalist first. Outer Sydney suburbs (Hills District, Penrith, Sutherland, Western Sydney) generally don't require permits. ### What can't I pack for the removalist? Hazardous goods are off limits: gas bottles (BBQ, camping), petrol/diesel cans, paints, solvents, fireworks, ammunition, loose lithium batteries, aerosols. Perishable food, plants, pets and personal valuables (jewellery, important documents, medications) stay with you, never on the truck. ### Should I tip removalists in Australia? Tipping is not standard. Cold water and acknowledging the team's work goes further than cash, especially in Sydney summer. A small tip of $20-$50 per crew member after a long or difficult move is welcome but never expected. The most valuable thank-you is a Google review. ### How early should I book my Sydney removalist? 4 weeks ahead for local moves, 6-8 weeks for interstate, longer for moves between November and February (Sydney summer is peak season). End-of-month and end-of-quarter dates fill first, mid-week mid-month dates last longest. Book the day you have a confirmed move date.
