Can You Transport a Fridge Lying Down? What to Know Before You Move It
========================================================================

 TipTop Moving

  Published on 11/07/2026

You can transport a fridge lying down, but upright is always better. If you do lay it on its side, stand it upright and leave it unplugged for the same amount of time it spent on its side before you switch it on. That lets the compressor oil settle back where it belongs. Laid down for more than a day? Give it a full 24 hours.

This one small step saves a lot of fridges. Here is why it matters, how long to wait, and how to prep the fridge so it survives moving day.

The short answer
----------------

Move a fridge upright whenever you can. A removalist truck is tall enough to stand a fridge up and strap it in, so that is how it should travel.

Laying it down is a last resort, usually a boot or a ute that will not fit it upright. It will not ruin the fridge on its own, as long as you follow the wait rule below before you power it back on. The risk is not the trip. The risk is switching it on too soon.

How long to wait before turning it on
-------------------------------------

When a fridge tilts, the oil in the compressor runs out into the cooling lines. Switch it on before that oil drains back and the compressor runs dry for a bit, which is what wears it out or kills it early. The fix is time, not money.

The rule is simple: stand it upright, unplugged, for at least as long as it was on its side.

Time on its sideStand it upright before switching onA few minutes (just tilted to move)About 30 minutesUp to a few hoursThe same number of hoursMore than a dayA full 24 hoursIf in doubt, wait longer. There is no harm in giving a fridge extra standing time, and there is real harm in rushing it. Four hours of patience is cheaper than a new compressor.

Which side to lay a fridge on
-----------------------------

If you have no choice but to lay it down, lay it on the side away from the compressor pipework at the back, so the tubing is not crushed under the weight. On most fridges that means the side opposite the cord and connections. Your manual will say for your model, and manufacturers publish it too, like [LG's transport guidance](https://www.lg.com/us/support/help-library/lg-refrigerator-how-to-transport-an-lg-refrigerator--20153122268425).

Some fridges should never be laid down at all. As a rule, keep these upright the whole way:

- French door and side-by-side fridges
- Bottom-mount freezer models
- Built-in and integrated fridges
- Compact and bar fridges with the compressor mounted a certain way

For these, upright is not a preference, it is a requirement. If yours is one of them and it will not fit upright in your car, that is the moment to have a removalist take it.

How to prep a fridge for moving
-------------------------------

A fridge needs a day of prep, not ten minutes. Start the day before.

- **Empty it and defrost it.** Clear everything out and switch it off around 24 hours before the move so the freezer fully defrosts. A fridge that is still frosting up will leak water across your floor and into the truck.
- **Dry the inside.** Wipe out the melt water and leave the doors open overnight so it does not travel damp and start to smell.
- **Secure the shelves and drawers.** Take out loose glass shelves and crispers and pack them separately, or tape them in place. Loose glass and a moving truck do not mix.
- **Tape the doors shut.** Use a proper moving strap or painter's tape, not packing tape that leaves residue on the finish. Tape the cord up too so nobody trips on it.
- **Clean behind it.** The back and the coils collect dust. A quick vacuum now saves moving that grime into your new kitchen.
- **Measure the path out.** A fridge is wider than it looks. Check it clears every doorway on the way out, which matters in older Sydney terraces where a doorway can be as narrow as 76 cm. If it is tight, the fridge doors pop off and buy you a few centimetres.

Why upright is better, and how we handle it
-------------------------------------------

Upright is better because there is nothing to wait for. A fridge that travels standing up can be plugged in as soon as it is in place and levelled, so your food is cold that night instead of the next day.

On a TipTop move, fridges travel upright, strapped and blanket-wrapped against the side of the truck. We set it down where you want it and level it, ready to plug in.

Getting there is the other half. A fridge needs two people, a heavy-duty trolley and straps, never dragging it across the floor on its corners. On Sydney stairs and through narrow terrace or apartment doorways, we tilt and pivot it rather than force it, and take the fridge doors off when a doorway is too tight. It is heavy, awkward and one of the easiest things in the house to damage a wall with, which is exactly why it is worth handing to a crew that moves them every day. If you are booking a [local move in Sydney](/local-moves), the fridge is just part of the job, handled the same careful way as everything else. Our [moving cost calculator](/calculator) includes it when it sizes your move.

Frequently asked questions
--------------------------

### Can you lay a fridge down to transport it?

Yes, if you have to, but upright is better. If you lay it on its side, stand it upright and leave it unplugged for at least as long as it was lying down before you switch it on. That gives the compressor oil time to settle back.

### How long should a fridge stand before turning it on after moving?

The same time it spent on its side. A couple of hours down means a couple of hours upright. If it was down for more than a day, or you are not sure, give it a full 24 hours. If it only tilted briefly during an upright move, about 30 minutes is plenty.

### What happens if you plug a fridge in too soon?

The compressor can run before its oil has drained back from the cooling lines, so it runs dry for a while. That is what causes early wear or a dead compressor. Waiting the right amount of time avoids it completely.

### Which fridges should never be laid down?

French door, side-by-side, bottom-freezer, built-in and most compact fridges should stay upright the whole way. Check your manual, but if in doubt, keep it standing.

### Do removalists move fridges upright?

Yes. A removal truck is tall enough to stand a fridge up, strap it in and wrap it, which is why we move them that way. It means no waiting to plug in at the other end. For packing the rest of the kitchen, our [packing guide](/blog/packing-tips-for-moving-house) covers the fragile things.
